Techo Kaigi

Japanese term that translates to a personal meeting with oneself. This practice involves evaluating and reflecting on one’s planner setup to ensure it aligns with personal goals and needs.

I wasn’t sure I was going to write this blog, purely on the basis that I wasn’t convinced it wad needed, but I recently changed how I use my notebooks, and that, combined with a post on Facebook asking how people bullet journal with a Travelers Notebook, convinced me to document my updated setup.

Previously I’ve written about settling on the Bullet Journal Pocket Notebook as my everyday carry notebook of choice and also about using a Travelers Company Passport sized insert as a photo journal.

Well, since March, when I made the last of those posts, things changed a lot, or a little, depending on your outlook.

The first big change came in around May, when I did away with the second journal / thinking book pocket notebook and decided to split the functionality in to two books; a Leuchtturm1917 B6+ ruled softback notebook as my journal and a Leuchtturm1917 A5 dot grid hardback notebook as the thinking / commonplace / waste book.

The next change came around July time when I acquired a Canon Selphy CP1500 printer as well as once again making use of my Instax Square printer, both of which produce prints that were really too large for the passport sized insert I had been using as my photo journal. So I took the decision to move my photo journalling in to my main journal.

All of this had been working well until recently when I went to visit All Things Analogue in Eastbourne for Stationery Store Day and took along my journal, as well as my EDC notebook, because I knew they would have a store stamp and wanted to include that in my journal. But I found even just adding the B6+ notebook to my bag and juggling notebooks to be a pain. So much so that when I wanted to write up some thoughts on the day whilst I was out, I didn’t reach for my journal, but instead wrote them in the back of my pocket notebook. That was a sign!

All of this is to say that I am now back where I started at the beginning of the year, well at least sort of. Shelved are the B6+ and A5 notebooks and I am using two pocket notebooks, both in the leather cover. One is my bullet journal / journal / photo journal and the other a thinking / commonplace / waste book. I can stick full size ( 4 x 6 inch) prints from the Selphy in them, but honestly I was rarely doing that anyway, and half size prints fit just fine, as do the square prints from the Instax and my, also recently acquired, Canon Selphy QX20 (I have more printers that I really need). I’m still figuring out if I want journal entries and photos inline with my daily log or separate, starting from the back of the book, but that’s fine. I’ll find a rhythm soon enough.

Oh, one minor change I had made to my EDC notebook, again probably starting about May time was to draw monthly spreads in the back for the current month and the next three months, just so that I had a quick reference for upcoming items of note. My Apple Calendar is still the “one true source”, but this means I don’t have to reach for a device to check my general availability.

How long will the current setup last? Who knows? But seeing as I seem to gravitate back to pocket notebooks whenever I try something else, I have high hopes that I won’t be needing too write an update post anytime soon.
